Transparency and Asynchronous Method Invocation

چکیده

This article focuses on transparency in the context of asynchronous method invocation. It describes two solutions available to provide full-transparency: where asynchronism is entirely masked to the developer. The main contribution of this paper is to clearly present the drawbacks of this approach: exception handling and developer consciousness are two problems inherent to full-transparency that makes it at least, hard to use, at worst, useless. This paper defends explicit asynchronous method invocation and proposes semi-transparency: almost all the complexity of asynchronism is masked to the developer but the asynchronism itself. keywords: transparency, asynchronous method invocation, concurrency

Object Interconnections Programming Asynchronous Method Invocations with CORBA Messaging ( Column 16

Welcome to our continuing coverage of asynchronous messaging and the new CORBA Messaging specification [1]. Our previous column presented an overview of the specification. It also outlined how the Messaging specification alleviates the tedium of programming with deferred synchronous operations via the Dynamic Invocation Interface (DII) and avoids the weak reliability semantics of oneway operati...

A software framework based on real-time CORBA for telerobotic systems

The technological developments in distributed systems have led to new telerobotic applications, such as virtual laboratories and remote maintenance of complex equipment. These applications must satisfy both the general requirements of distributed computing, e.g. location transparency and interoperability, and the domain-specific requirements of reconfigurability, guaranteed performance, real-ti...

The Design and Performance of a Scalable ORB Architecture for CORBA Asynchronous Messaging

Historically, method-oriented middleware, such as Sun RPC, DCE, Java RMI, COM, and CORBA, has provided synchronous method invocation (SMI) models to applications. Although SMI works well for conventional client/server applications, it is not well-suited for high-performance or real-time applications due to its lack of scalability. To address this problem, the OMG has recently standardized an as...

Late Adaptation of Method Invocation Semantics Regular Talk

In distributed object systems, one has the possibility to make method invocations on objects located on other host. During such an invocation, data is sent to another host and back. However, the system tries to hide this and simulate a standcard method invocation as close as possible. Some systems [Voyager] try to offer other invocation semantics, e.g. asynchronous method invocation. We try to ...

NASA Global Change Master Directory: An Implementation of Asynchronous Management Protocol in a Heterogeneous Distributed Environment

The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) is an earth science repository that specifically tracks research data on global climatic change. The GCMD is migrating from a centralized architecture to a globally distributed replicated heterogeneous federated system. One of the greatest challenges facing database research is the integration of heterogeneous systems without compromising the local auto...
